It is probably safe to say that some of the leading digital cameras in the world come under the name of Pentax. Photographers, both seasoned and amateurs, have long seen Pentax SLR cameras to be the top choice, and Pentax Digital SLR Cameras are now enjoying the same reputation. At the same time, Pentax has not ignored the digital compact camera market, producing a range of digital point and shoot cameras.
Like Canon and Nikon, Pentax was established in Japan, first being named Asahi Kogaku Goshi Kausha, in Tokyo in 1919. The company started off making lenses and cameras, before changing its name to Ashai Optical two decades later. Pentax left the industrial arena after World War II, only to return in 1948.
In 1952, the first Japanese SLR camera was introduced. They called it Asahiflex I, a 35-mm single-lens reflex model. In the following years, more advanced models were developed, as the industry expanded, with Pentax always leading the way.
Pentax is well-noted for its film cameras such as Pentax K1000 which happens to be one of the most remarkable film cameras in the world today, having being used by millions of photography students. Today’s models include a combination of compact items for newbies and DSLR models for semi-pro users. The newest models are the Pentax K-X, Optio W80, Optio WS80, Pentax X70 and Pentax K-7. The Pentax K-X, for instance, has premium and advanced features such as lightning-fast speed, high definition video, and live view. The Optio W80 and WS80 are actually waterproof compact cameras that can withstand the elements and can be used to take photos and videos underwater.
