Nikon cameras have been around for more than ninety years now and since the brand's introduction to the market, more than eleven million units have already been sold.
Japan first saw Nikon in 1917 but under the name of Nippon Kogaku K.K. However, it was not until 1948 when the company used the name Nikon. Its first SLR camera was introduced in 1959. Although that was a standard 35-mm SLR camera, digital followed soon after, in 1961, when Nikon introduced its first digital camcorder. It was in 1995 when the fist Nikon digital cameras that specialised in static images were made (Fuji Photo Film took part in the marketing).
Nikon offers a variety of digital camera models depending on the budget of buyers. The Nikon digital compact cameras aimed at consumers are less than $500, while digital single-lens reflex versions can reach as much $8,000.
Today, Nikon sells different electronic devices from film scanners and various camera accessories. In 2006, it announced its prime focus on manufacture of digital cameras while discontinuing production of most film camera models.
